The objective of this theme is to contribute to improved health outcomes and well-being among youth in Kenya.
For many young people, the journey to adulthood is filled with questions, pressures, and life-changing decisions.
Some struggle silently with anxiety, stress, depression, or the weight of expectations from family, school, and society. Others navigate relationships, sexuality, and reproductive health without access to reliable information or trusted support systems. Many find themselves exposed to drugs and substances that promise escape but often leave lasting consequences.
At Stretchers Youth Organization (SYO), we have seen these realities first-hand.
We have sat in classrooms where young people were afraid to talk about their mental health for fear of being judged. We have listened to adolescents seeking answers about their bodies, relationships, and futures. We have met young people whose dreams were put at risk by substance use, misinformation, stigma, and a lack of safe spaces to seek help.
These experiences have shaped our commitment to building healthier, informed, and empowered communities.
Through innovative campaigns, community dialogues, school-based programmes, digital advocacy, peer education initiatives, and youth-led conversations, we create spaces where young people can access accurate information, ask difficult questions, and find support without fear or shame.
Our mental health programmes encourage young people to speak openly about their experiences, challenge stigma, and prioritize their emotional well-being. We believe that seeking help is not a sign of weakness but an act of courage, and we work to foster communities where no one has to struggle alone.
Our Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR) initiatives equip adolescents and young people with the knowledge and confidence to make informed decisions about their health, relationships, and futures. By promoting access to accurate information and youth-friendly services, we empower young people to take control of their well-being and advocate for their rights.
At the same time, our substance abuse prevention efforts focus on empowering young people with the skills, awareness, and resilience needed to resist harmful influences and make healthy choices. Rather than simply telling young people what not to do, we help them understand why their choices matter and how they can protect their future aspirations.
What makes our approach unique is that we meet young people where they are. Whether through social media campaigns, storytelling, creative arts, sports, community outreach, peer-led engagements, or digital platforms, we use innovative and relatable methods that speak the language of today’s generation.
Every conversation we facilitate, every campaign we launch, and every young person we reach is part of a larger vision: a generation that is mentally healthy, informed about their rights, free from harmful substance use, and empowered to make decisions that lead to healthier and more fulfilling lives.
